United States of America on the nationality list

American passports are not covered by any of Azerbaijan’s temporary visa-free arrangements, so a visa is needed for each trip, but the United States is on the eVisa list and the whole request can be made online. When the form asks for nationality, look for United States of America rather than USA or America. If someone in your group travels on a different passport, the eligible countries list shows whether their nationality qualifies, and our Azerbaijan eVisa guide explains how the electronic visa works.

Use your passport book, not the passport card

The application is made with the details of a passport book: its number, its expiry date and a scan of its photo page. The wallet-sized US passport card is not valid for international air travel, so it is not the document to apply with, even if it is the one you carry most often. Check that the passport book will still be valid for at least 180 days after you arrive in Azerbaijan, and renew it first if it will not.

What else to prepare

Besides each traveller’s passport details and photo-page scan, the form asks for the arrival date, where you will stay, a contact phone number in international format (+1 for US numbers) and one email address that will receive every message. What you need to apply explains which scan files are accepted and what makes them readable.

How long an American can stay

Count on two numbers: the Azerbaijan eVisa for US citizens is usable for 90 days, and the time you spend in Azerbaijan under it is capped at 30 days. Plan to be registered at your address if a visit will run past 15 days, as the migration rules describe, and read duration of stay if you might need longer than the 30 days.

Speed, timing and price of the Azerbaijan eVisa for US citizens

Booking a week or more ahead? Standard processing, at 3 working days, is enough, provided your arrival is at least 4 days after the day you apply. Leaving sooner, urgent processing turns the application around in 3 hours and accepts an arrival the same day; whichever you choose applies to every traveller on the application. Per person it is USD 59 standard or USD 130 urgent, so six people on urgent pay USD 780 in all. The charge itself is in Azerbaijani manat (AZN), the dollar figures are an approximate guide, and the fee page sets out the refundable part.

Washington, Los Angeles and the other offices

None of Azerbaijan’s offices in the United States is involved in an eVisa. For matters an eVisa does not cover, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Washington, DC, has a consular department and publishes its information at washington.mfa.gov.az; there is also a Consulate General in Los Angeles and an honorary consulate in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Addresses and phone numbers for each are listed under United States on our Azerbaijan embassies page.
