Does a Swiss passport need a visa for Azerbaijan?

It does. Azerbaijan currently waives the visa for the citizens of only eight countries, and Switzerland is not among them, but Swiss nationals qualify for the electronic version. Every nationality with the same option appears on our eligible countries list, and the Azerbaijan eVisa page describes the system as a whole.

Travelling with citizens of Liechtenstein

Azerbaijan’s embassy in Bern is also accredited to the Principality of Liechtenstein, and Liechtenstein is on the eVisa list in its own right. A traveller with a Liechtenstein passport therefore selects Liechtenstein, not Switzerland, as their nationality, and can still share an application with Swiss friends or relatives, because the nationality is recorded separately for each person.

Living in Switzerland on an EU passport

Many people who live in Switzerland hold the passport of a neighbouring country instead. The visa route follows that passport, not the Swiss residence permit, and Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Portugal are all on the eVisa list. Our guides for German, French, Italian and Austrian citizens cover their own details, and a household that mixes these passports with Swiss ones can still apply together.

What to have ready for the Azerbaijan eVisa for Swiss citizens

Each traveller’s Swiss passport has to stay valid for at least 180 days after the arrival in Azerbaijan. For every person you enter the surname and given names exactly as printed, umlauts included, the passport number and expiry date, an occupation and a home address, and you upload a scan of the photo page as a JPG, PNG or PDF of up to 8 MB. The arrival date, the accommodation and the purpose of travel are entered only once, along with one email address and one phone number; a Swiss mobile such as 079 is written as +41 79 and the rest of the number. More detail is in visa requirements.

Three travellers: what they pay

The Azerbaijan eVisa for Swiss citizens costs USD 59 a person with standard processing, which takes up to 3 working days, or USD 130 with urgent processing, which takes up to 3 hours. Three travellers therefore pay USD 177 or USD 390. Payment is taken in Azerbaijani manat, AZN 100.30 or AZN 221.00 per traveller. Standard needs your arrival to be at least 4 days after you apply, whereas urgent also covers a same-day arrival. Refund terms are set out on the fee page.

Thirty days in Azerbaijan

Once issued, the eVisa is valid for 90 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days. Anyone remaining for more than 15 days must be registered at their place of stay, as our migration rules page explains, and longer visits are covered under duration of stay.

Bern and Geneva: two Azerbaijani missions

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Switzerland is at Kramburgstrasse 10 in Bern and receives consular visitors by appointment; its website is bern.mfa.gov.az. Azerbaijan also keeps a permanent mission in Versoix, near Geneva, accredited to the United Nations Office and other international organisations there. Neither office plays any part in the Azerbaijan eVisa for Swiss citizens, and both are listed under Switzerland on our Azerbaijan embassies page.

From review to the printed visa

When your payment clears, our team checks each traveller’s entries against the passport scans and asks you to correct anything that does not match. The application then goes to the official portal, and the decision rests with Azerbaijan’s authorities. An approval email contains a secure link to every traveller’s eVisa; print each one and travel with it beside the matching passport. You can ask for a new link through check your application status. The application form for the Azerbaijan eVisa for Swiss citizens is ready whenever your dates are, and the FAQ answers further questions.
